Regardless of the size of your organization, you’re likely being asked to accomplish two (seemingly clashing) goals:

  1. Enable all of your people to be productive from anywhere and on any device
  2. Reduce the overall cost of your IT operations

When thinking about traditional virtual desktops infrastructure (VDI) or Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solutions, enabling goal #1 with those legacy solutions is often diametrically opposed to accomplishing goal #2. Which is where Cameyo’s cloud-first Virtual App Delivery (VAD) platform comes in, and why we’re excited to introduce our new Cameyo for Linux service to enable organizations to make their digital workspaces even more efficient and cost-effective.

While Cameyo’s existing VAD platform enables the delivery of all Windows, SaaS, and internal web apps to any device – Cameyo for Linux extends that capability to Linux applications as well as internal web apps that don’t require a Windows server. This dramatically reduces the cost of delivering Cloud Desktops by eliminating the need for costly Microsoft Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs) while providing organizations with the flexibility they need to use their preferred solutions.

“Many organizations today use a combination of SaaS-enabled productivity apps and then utilize Virtual App Delivery solutions like Cameyo for all of their business-critical apps that are not fully web-enabled,” said Gabe Knuth, Senior Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). “But there are also a lot of organizations where the only apps holding them back from accessing everything from any device are their Linux databases & apps. With the addition of Cameyo for Linux, organizations can now deliver all of their apps – SaaS, Windows, internal web apps, and Linux – to any device with Cameyo.”

Making Cloud Desktops More Efficient and Cost-Effective

“Here at Sanmina we’re always looking for ways to make our operations more secure, efficient, and cost-effective. This is what originally brought us to Cameyo, and we’ve used Cameyo for several years to give our employees secure access to all of their apps on Chromebooks,” said Mario Zúñiga, IT Director, Digital Workplace at Sanmina. “Now with Cameyo for Linux, we’re able to deliver several of our internal web apps on Linux servers instead of Windows servers. Because of the efficiency of Linux, Cameyo for Linux will allow us to serve more users per server. This also eliminates the need for RDS CALs, which dramatically reduces the cost of our digital workspace initiatives while giving us more flexibility.”

Cameyo has long been used by organizations of all sizes as a more secure, simple, flexible and cost-effective alternative to legacy virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) products. The introduction of Cameyo for Linux further helps organizations:

    • Streamline Infrastructure – Linux servers have less overhead than Windows servers. For any organization utilizing apps & databases that don’t require a Windows server, Cameyo for Linux provides a more efficient solution. And with Cameyo’s fully-hosted option, organizations can deliver their apps on Linux servers without the need to actively manage the supporting infrastructure themselves.
    • Reduce Costs – Cameyo for Linux helps reduce the cost of digital workspaces in two ways:
      • Microsoft Licensing Costs – Previously, organizations that had internal web apps needed to run those on Windows servers, which required Microsoft licenses and RDS CALs, dramatically increasing the cost of delivering those apps. Cameyo for Linux enables organizations to deliver all of their apps that don’t require a Windows server via Linux, eliminating the cost of Microsoft licenses.
      • Windows Server Costs – The hourly rate of Linux servers is 50% less than that of Windows servers, so beyond the up front licensing cost savings, Cameyo for Linux provides ongoing cost reductions for Cloud Desktops.
    • Deliver a Seamless User Experience for All Apps – Cameyo’s support of all applications – Windows, SaaS, internal web apps, and now Linux – provides a completely seamless Cloud Desktop experience for the end user. Cameyo for Linux enables IT admins to easily publish Linux apps as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) just as they can with Windows apps. Regardless of the type of application or which type of server it’s running on, users simply access and use their apps as they normally would, with nothing new to learn.
  • Future Proofing – Cameyo has always helped organizations deliver their legacy applications to any device via the browser or PWAs, helping bring their legacy apps into the future. With Cameyo for Linux, Cameyo also helps ensure that all future apps – including web apps that don’t require a Windows server – can also be efficiently and cost-effectively delivered to any device from the same platform.

Even Greater Protection Against Vendor Lock-In

Cameyo is the only virtualization solution that enables organizations to deliver all of their apps – including Windows apps – without delivering the full Windows desktop. This provides organizations of all sizes with a Windows OS-independent Cloud Desktop, which gives them the freedom to adopt any device, OS, and cloud they want without fear of being locked into the Microsoft environment. Cameyo also recently received its second issued patent for its Temporary User Profiles technology, which make it easier for enterprises to move to the cloud by eliminating the on-premises components that make legacy virtualization solutions so costly and complex – including Active Directory, roaming users profiles, network drive mapping, VPNs, and more.

Cameyo for Linux is the latest Cameyo innovation focused on providing organizations with the freedom and flexibility they need to provide their people with secure productivity from anywhere and any device without being locked into one vendor’s ecosystem.

“Every organization is working hard to ensure their people have access to all of the critical tools they need to do their jobs from anywhere. But especially in this economic climate, most organizations are trying to balance that anytime, anywhere access with the need to reduce costs,” said Eyal Dotan, Founder and CTO of Cameyo. “With the addition of Linux support, Cameyo is enabling organizations to give their people a seamless, secure experience for all of their apps – both past, present, and future – from a single platform.”

Cameyo for Linux is available today worldwide. To see how much delivering apps via Cameyo for Linux can save your organization compared to traditional virtual desktops and Windows servers, schedule a demo here.

A Patent for Protecting Against Vendor Lock-In and Roaming User Profile Bloat https://cameyo.com/cameyo-patent-protecting-against-vendor-lockin/ Wed, 12 Oct 2022 10:00:28 +0000 https://cameyo.com/?p=229878 Cameyo has received its second issued patent for its technology that protects customers against vendor lock-in and roaming user profile bloat.

The post A Patent for Protecting Against Vendor Lock-In and Roaming User Profile Bloat appeared first on Cameyo.

]]>

And Almost 5 years ago now, Cameyo was founded on the premise that every organization should have the freedom to use any devices and OS they prefer, while still being able to give their people access to the Windows apps (and all apps) they need to be productive. Sounds reasonable, right? And yet, as organizations increasingly adopt operating systems like ChromeOS (for security, cost, simplicity, and environmental benefits) or adopt BYOD policies, they all face the same problem. And that’s the fact that all the traditional virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) providers force them to deliver a Windows OS-based virtual desktop to their devices in order to access Windows apps.

Imagine making the strategic decision to migrate to move to the more secure and cost-effective ChromeOS, only to be told that on those ChromeOS devices, you’d still have to deliver the Windows OS (virtually) if you wanted people to have access to their business-critical Windows apps. Yeah, we didn’t think it made sense, either. Which is one of the reasons why we developed Cameyo as the Windows OS-independent option for organizations that want to deliver Windows apps (and all apps) to any device without being locked into Windows-based virtual desktops.

And now we’re proud to announce that we’ve received our second patent, which protects the technology that enables this Windows independence – Cameyo’s Temporary User Profiles technology. Cameyo Temporary User Profiles make it easier for enterprises to move to the cloud by eliminating the on-premises components that make legacy virtualization solutions so costly and complex – including Active Directory, roaming users profiles, network drive mapping, VPNs, and more.

Eliminating Roaming User Profile Bloat and Vendor Lock-in

For organizations that are looking to migrate to the cloud, roaming user profile bloat is holding them back. Active Directory and roaming user profiles are not a fit for the cloud – they are complex, and negatively impact the user experience. Virtualization solutions that rely on roaming user profiles fall into the trap of constantly trying to sync modern technology with the past instead of clearing the path for cloud-native technologies by eliminating the dependence on Active Directory and on-premise components.

With legacy VDI and DaaS solutions, everything the user has ever done is pulled into each session. This causes user profiles to swell to dozens if not hundreds of gigabytes in size, resulting in significant performance issues for the end user. Cameyo’s Temporary User Profiles technology eliminates this user profile bloat associated with Active Directory, enabling Cameyo to deliver a seamless, secure Cloud Desktop experience for end users. And while the patent is newly issued, Cameyo’s Temporary User Profiles are already being used by hundreds of Cameyo customers globally, including Fortune 500 organizations.

The Cameyo Temporary User Profiles patent is strategic for our customers for three key reasons:

  • Protecting Our Customers Against Vendor Lock-In. Cameyo’s Temporary User Profiles are what give it the unique capability to operate without dependency on Microsoft’s Active Directory and the bloated roaming profiles that come with it.
  • Protecting Our Customers’ Ability to Reduce Costs Without Sacrificing Scalability. Cameyo Temporary User Profiles enable administrators to set up elastic server environments without having to worry about mapping user profiles to a particular server. From an elasticity perspective, this is as flexible as it gets, and enables the highest levels of cost reduction.
  • Protecting Our Customers’ Networks, Data, and Users. Cameyo Temporary User Profiles are also unique in terms of data privacy and security, enabling Cameyo’s practice of wiping every session as soon as it’s over. This ensures that there are no traces of private data left on Cameyo servers after a session, while also ensuring the protection of customers’ networks since Cameyo does not sync any malware or Windows-related issues.

So How Do Cameyo’s Temporary User Profiles Work?

Here’s an outline of how Cameyo’s Temporary User Profiles technology works, and the functionality that is protected by this latest patent:

  • Cameyo creates Temporary User Profiles that are not tied to Active Directory.
  • When a user is ready to start a session, Cameyo generates an ultra-secure, one-time password.
  • Cameyo then allows the user to connect with a Temporary User Profile.
  • To make sure each temporary session is familiar to the user and where they left off, Cameyo brings back the data from a user’s previous session with its unique Session Sync technology.
  • For example – a hybrid worker who splits time between home and the office can access all of their apps from anywhere, and their data from previous sessions always follows them so that they can continue to work when they log back in.
  • Whenever they log off, Cameyo wipes that session, but sync the user’s session data with Session Sync.
  • When the user logs back on, Cameyo could be serving them from a totally different server with a brand new, temporary Windows user profile just for that session – while still preserving their data from one session to the next.

Looking for an Alternative to Citrix & VMware?

As legacy VDI and DaaS providers like Citrix and VMware are acquired and their customers look for cloud-native alternatives, this patent puts Cameyo in a unique position to become the new standard for enterprise virtualization. And we already have dozens and dozens of customers who have made the switch from Citrix or VMware to Cameyo, for example:

If you’d like to learn more about why organizations have already made the switch from legacy Windows OS-based VDI and DaaS solutions to Cameyo, we’d love to discuss, share more examples, and show you how it works. You can schedule a demo with one of our Cloud Desktop experts here. Regardless of whether it’s due to a cyber-attack or some other disaster, you can’t afford to have data center outages that result in downtime that impacts your business operations. Which is why so many organizations like yours are investing in disaster recovery & business continuity plans to help ensure their people can continue to access the applications & data they need to do their jobs and keep the business running.

Back in April, we introduced our Cameyo Rapid Recovery service to help organizations keep their networks & data safe and their people productive in case of an emergency and/or ransomware attack. The service runs in Google Cloud and provides organizations with a separate, secure cloud desktop environment from Cameyo that they can instantly switch to if their on-premises environment is attacked or disrupted, enabling their employees to maintain access to all their business-critical apps in case of emergency.

And while Cameyo Rapid Recovery provides a great option for organizations running their own data centers to fail over to Google Cloud with no interruption to the Cameyo cloud desktop service – what about organizations that are already utilizing Google Cloud but also want an added layer of resiliency in case there are any issues with their primary data center location? That’s why today we announced new Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) capabilities within Cameyo called One-Click Cloud Failover. The introduction of One-Click Cloud Failover gives organizations using Cameyo’s service in Google Cloud the ability to easily select a backup region so that, in case of an issue in their primary data center location, they can easily switch to the new data center region without disruption in service to end users.

“While Cameyo Rapid Recovery was designed to provide our self-hosted customers with an insurance policy in case their on-premises environment was attacked, our new One-Click Cloud Failover capabilities give our fully-hosted customers additional peace of mind in case anything were to happen with their primary Google Cloud data center location,” said Andrew Miller, Co-Founder and CEO of Cameyo.

“IT organizations have learned the importance of business continuity, and Cameyo’s new One-Click Failover and it’s existing Rapid Recovery capabilities leverage their partnership with Google Cloud to give companies the capabilities they need to ensure end-user productivity in the event of a disruption to their primary site. This is a natural fit for companies that want to use the cloud as a backup datacenter, or that want to add resiliency to an existing Cameyo deployment in Google Cloud,” said Gabe Knuth, Senior Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). “Plus, Cameyo’s dedication to Zero Trust means that this can be done without cutting any corners on security.”

The Cameyo One-Click Cloud Failover functionality is available today to all Cameyo customers using Google Cloud. Like all of Cameyo’s security capabilities, One-Click Cloud Failover is built into the core of the platform and is available immediately to Cameyo customers at no additional cost. Want to learn more? Schedule a quick demo with one of our cloud desktop experts and we’ll show you how it works.

Yesterday THE Journal – a leading education technology publication – announced the winners of its 2020 New Product Awards, and we’re excited that Cameyo was selected as the best new product in the “Virtual Desktop/Thin Client” category (full list of winners here). Image for a blog post announcing Cameyo has won the THE Journal's Best New Product Award for Virtual Desktops

THE Journal is dedicated to informing and educating K-12 senior-level district and school administrators, technologists, and tech-savvy educators to help improve and advance the learning process through the use of technology. The 2020 New Product Awards honor “the outstanding product development achievements of manufacturers and suppliers whose products or services are considered to be particularly noteworthy in the transformation of education technology.

“Perhaps more than ever, 2020 has been a year defined by the use of technology in education. We’re pleased to recognize these products that are making a difference for students, teachers and administrators alike,” said David Nagel, editor-in-chief of THE Journal.

Cameyo’s Take

Obviously it’s always exciting to win awards. But the fact that this is the first year THE Journal has done these awards as a way to highlight technology providers who have played a particularly strong role in helping schools & districts through all of the challenges of distance learning – that’s what makes this one feel particularly special to us.

In a time where almost every school & district is struggling to put systems in place to ensure the best possible education experience for their students, it’s been incredibly rewarding to be able to help so many organizations through this shift to distance learning. Back at the end of September we announced that we had deployed Cameyo for 34 school districts in 30 days, and since then that number has grown to 49 districts.

In the announcement we made in September (full version here), we included three of our new school district customers who shared why they selected Cameyo and what the results have been thus far. The fact that we have such vocally supportive customers (like these three school districts and dozens more) likely played a big role in THE Journal selecting us for this award, so we want to express our gratitude for all of our customers’ support and advocacy.

Most of these school districts had thought that their only option for enabling students to access all of their Windows software from home on any device was virtual desktops, which in many cases they simply couldn’t afford (or didn’t have the staff to manage the complexity). These districts perfectly illustrate a point that we make frequently here at Cameyo, which is that it’s all about providing people with the right technology based on their needs. Here at Cameyo, we’re focused on helping all organizations to right-size their approach to desktop & application virtualization. Virtual desktops are great for people who truly need that functionality, but for districts who just need to give their students virtual access to all of the critical software they need to complete coursework from home – utilizing virtual application delivery in those scenarios drastically reduces the cost & complexity.

At this point it’s become clear that distance/remote learning – and/or a hybrid model where kids are at home some days and at school the rest of the days – will continue to be the reality for quite some time. So we’re happy to be here to continue to help schools & districts (and organizations of any type and size) continue to give their people access to all of the software & applications they need, on any device, from any location. And we’re honored that our efforts with school districts thus far has been recognized by THE Journal as the best new product for virtual desktops/thin clients. Rest assured that we’ll continue to work hard to ensure we’re always deserving of awards like these.

Welcome to our brief glance back at some of the most interesting trends and predictions for remote work that we’ve come across over the past month. And if you’re not already doing so, be sure to join us every Friday for our “This Week in Remote Work” posts, where we recap the top remote work stories of the week.Image for blog post on the Top Remote Work Stats for November 2020

As we start to round the corner into a new year, the figures and analyses we’re seeing paint a pretty definitive picture for what IT departments and CTOs can expect in 2021.

Forrester predicts remote work will increase by 300% compared to pre-pandemic levels

At the tail end of October, Forrester published its 2021 predictions for the year ahead. Among the dynamics that they saw as having the most impact on firms in the coming year, remote work ranked in the top three along with HR technology and automation. (I highly recommend checking out the full Forrester guide. You can download it here.)

Specifically, a Forrester analyst had this to say:

“While there is no clear end point to the pandemic yet, the number of employees working remotely will begin to dwindle, eventually settling in at 300% of pre-pandemic levels at the minimum.”

Although the word “dwindle” doesn’t really capture what’s ultimately a threefold increase, you still get the idea. The record numbers of permanent remote workers that we’re seeing during the pandemic will fall from their current highs. But that will be nowhere close to the status quo that we saw before the arrival of COVID-19.

And most organizations will end up having some type of hybrid model where people come into an office part of the time, and work from home part of the time – so IT will still need to ensure those hybrid workers have access to all of their critical apps and systems on the days they work from home. Which leads us to our next stat…

Only 13% of companies are planning to return to a fully onsite workforce by 2022

Now that the viability of remote work is established, more companies than ever are acknowledging that it’s here to stay. According to the 2019 Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Index report, just over one-quarter (26%) of companies had zero employees working remotely full-time.

One year on, that figure has changed significantly. Just 7% of the more than 3,000 IT decision makers surveyed for the latest Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Index said their companies have had no full-time employees working from home during the pandemic. And only 13% have resolved to stay that way by 2022.

In other words, global events, changing attitudes and the rise of digital workspace solutions have halved the number of companies that are still committed to no full-time remote employees. That’s a huge shift in mindset over a very short period of time.

IT departments are clearly going to have to adapt to permanent work-from-home (WFH) and hybrid workplace models. That’s probably why close to half of the IT leaders in Nutanix’s report said that their priorities over the next 12 to 18 months will be improving their systems and supporting WFH capabilities.

Post-pandemic, 56% of workers would switch jobs to keep working remotely

Employers aren’t the only ones who are banking on remote work being more commonplace. According to a survey of 602 full-time workers conducted by one desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) tech company, more than half (56%) of the respondents said they were planning to switch jobs if their employer didn’t allow remote work after the pandemic.

That shows how much employees’ attitudes have changed over the past eight months. What was once a perk is now looking more like a basic criterion for choosing a job. That’s something companies will have to bear in mind when they’re hiring.

Some other interesting factoids from that survey, summarized here by Forbes:

  • Almost all (97%) said they’d taken necessary steps to stay equally focused while working remotely. That puts some fears over WFH productivity to rest, although those employees will still need the right solutions to stay productive.
  • Well over half (63%) of the respondents warmed to the idea of self-employment during the pandemic; of those, 87% cited schedule flexibility as the main reason.
  • Of the full-time workers surveyed, 85% were intrigued by the idea of becoming a “digital nomad.”

By the end of 2021, 80% of enterprises will accelerate their shift to a cloud-centric infrastructure

When IDC looked into its data-driven crystal ball, it saw that 8 out of every 10 enterprise-scale organizations would have some kind of mechanism in place to double their pre-pandemic rate of cloud migration by the end of 2021. That means they’ll be adopting cloud-centric infrastructure and applications twice as fast as they did nine months ago.

The reason for that isn’t surprising. The pandemic has exposed serious shortcomings in the resiliency, flexibility and scalability of many workplaces. To remain competitive and productive, they’re having to re-evaluate their legacy software and figure out how to adapt it to a dynamic, distributed workforce.

In fact, IDC predicts that in 2022 digitally resilient enterprises will be 50% faster in responding to new conditions than their peers who just focus on maintaining the status quo.

What about you? Which of these remote work trends are you seeing play out in your own company? Were there any other remote work stats that caught your eye in November? Feel free to bring them to our attention in the comments below.

In case you missed it, Spiceworks and Ziff Davis B2B (SWZD) recently released their 2021 State of IT report. Compiled on the strength of comprehensive surveys with IT professionals and CTOs, it’s packed with a ton of valuable and eye-opening info on IT budgets and priorities.2021 IT Report blog post image

The results of the report indicate how trends like remote work, digital workspaces and working from home are continuing to evolve—not just in response to COVID-19 but also to ongoing seismic shifts in the workplace.

In this post, we’ll take a deeper dive into some of The State of IT report’s most intriguing aspects.

A 55% increase in VDI signal volume

Back in March, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) saw a 55% increase in signal volume, a metric that captures interest and actionable intent toward a given solution. This surge in interest in VDI was second only to videoconferencing (60%).

What explains that surge? At the start of the pandemic, companies were scrambling to find whatever immediate solutions they could to facilitate remote work. In many cases organizations landed on utilizing VDI, simply because it was familiar. Most knew that it wasn’t a feasible long-term solution for their whole organization based on the complexity & cost, but they assumed they could rely on it for a couple of months and then trim it back down once the trouble blew over.

But as we know, that didn’t happen. So a lot of organizations found themselves faced with the prospect of supporting expensive, complex virtual desktop infrastructure into 2021 and beyond.

Since then, those organizations have adjusted for the long-term and shifted to more streamlined solutions like updated approaches to application virtualization. While VDI & DaaS are great solutions for people who truly need access to a full virtual desktop environment, they are overkill for the majority of people in an organization who just need simple, secure access to all of their business-critical apps on any device, from the browser. For that segment of your users, virtual application delivery can be more secure, less complex and more cost-effective for enabling productivity among remote and work-from-home (WFH) employees.

New drivers of IT budget increases

Even if the worst of the pandemic ends up being confined to 2020, its effects will continue to be felt for quite some time. In its “Drivers of IT Budget Increases” section, the State of IT report includes two completely new categories to account for this:

  • Changes to business operations during COVID-19
  • Supporting the remote workforce during COVID-19

Both of these changes are clearly going to impact IT spending in the near term. In fact, 38% of organizations who said they were increasing IT budgets next year cited COVID-related changes to business operations as a reason for doing so. Nearly the same amount—36%—said the same for supporting their remote workers.

What’s revealing is that, compared to small businesses, roughly twice as many mid-size and enterprise organizations responded in this way for each category. That illustrates the disproportionate effect that the size of the remote workforce has on the budget. It also highlights the need to find flexible solutions that can scale affordably from 100 digital workspaces to 10,000+.

Changing priorities are changing technology adoption

Among some businesses, The State of IT report found less enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology. For example, there was a lot of anticipation for Gigabit Wi-Fi networking last year, but it’s since dropped to 2018 levels. Pandemic-related reprioritization is the reason for that.

One area that saw a slight jump is virtual desktop infrastructure, which inched upward to a 46% current or planned adoption rate. Prior to the pandemic, Spiceworks pegged VDI adoption at 44% in its 2020 State of Virtualization Technology report. In the more recent survey, 26% of businesses said that their expanded VDI deployment was due to COVID.

According to those same stats:

  • 51% of large (5,000+) enterprises are already using VDI. Another 25% are planning to implement it within the next two years.
  • For organizations in the next size tier (1,000–4,999 employees), 38% are currently using VDI. A further 31% are looking to adopt it.

Though it’s possible that the SWZD report doesn’t take the trouble to distinguish between VDI and virtual application delivery, instead choosing to put all “virtual” solutions under the same umbrella, there are fundamental differences between these approaches to digital workspaces. It doesn’t just come down to ease of deployment and lower costs. It also has to do with their security.

Hardening the IT environment—inside and outside the workplace

Regarding security, The 2021 State of IT report has this to say:

“The massive shift to remote work has seen employees around the globe taking corporate devices and data outside of the relatively safe confines of corporate networks. This has sparked many concerns, particularly regarding endpoint device security, vulnerability management, detection of security events, and security incident response.”

Any embrace of conventional VDI seems to be at odds with attitudes toward endpoint device security, which IT professionals listed as their top concern for their remote workforce. Along with being more costly and cumbersome, using virtual desktop infrastructure as a platform for digital workspaces potentially broadens the IT attack surface.

Application virtualization, by contrast, can provide streamlined access to business-critical software without the task of overseeing a dedicated subset of IT infrastructure.

For example, virtual application delivery with Cameyo lets remote users run Windows applications right from their browser. They benefit from the seamless productivity of using essential Windows desktop software on any device. Meanwhile, IT can easily control their access on an app-by-app basis—and without the need for VPNs. That’s why Baldwinsville Central School District in New York described Cameyo as having “multiple layers of security truly baked in at the foundation,” unlike VDI.

To make your organization’s transition to remote work quick, smooth and secure, and without breaking the IT budget, get started today with a free trial of Cameyo.

As a company that’s always been fully remote (and whose technology enables secure remote work for millions), it’s a habit to keep our eye on the related trends in this space. What are the hot topics among industry experts and pundits? Which problems are customers seeking answers to? How are domestic and global events changing the way we think about and model the workplace?

Recently we’ve been monitoring interest in different subjects like working from home or virtual apps. Some are very timely, and some are fairly evergreen. Below, with the help of some standard industry tools, we’ll examine how the velocity of people writing about these topics helps indicate which of these topics are surging and which are beginning to plateau.

A quick note on how to read the charts below. The blue vertical bars indicate the amount of NEW authors writing about a topic in any given month. The green horizontal line indicates the total number of authors writing about that topic.

Remote Work

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

For reasons that should be pretty obvious, the term remote work hit a significant high back in March with a nearly 4X increase in the amount of authors writing about the topic. The level of interest in this topic was constant up until that point, likely rising a little in February when foresighted organizations began to get a glimpse of what was to come.

That was followed by a stepped decrease in new interest, though new interest has stayed roughly within the same range since May despite occasionally falling below pre-COVID levels. The reason for that? By June, many organizations had already developed some kind of remote work policy and a corresponding strategy, even if it was only a stopgap. Once there’s a bit more certainty globally, we expect to see interest increase again as organizations refine their remote work models.

Working from Home

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

The pattern for working from home broadly follows the pattern for remote work, very likely for the same reasons. An initial scramble to define working from home and identify work-from-home (WFH) strategies in March and April caused interest to spike. The amount of new authors covering the topic tapered off after that.

Here, too, we expect to see renewed interest in the subject of working from home once there’s more shared confidence about what the immediate future holds.

Distance Learning

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

In what’s clearly a trend among trends, March saw a rush to examine topics like distance learning that had taken on fresh urgency.

By comparison, however, the drop in interest since then hasn’t been as precipitous as others. That could be explained by the fact that the educational sector operates on a different schedule to the enterprise. As we know from our own experience with the significant number of educational organizations who’ve adopted Cameyo for distance learning, many districts spent the summer preparing for the 2020-21 school year and finding the right distance-learning solutions. Some are continuing to fine-tune their approach in response to the situation on the ground, which is why we saw sustained levels of interest into September. As we moved past the beginning of the school year, interest from new authors covering the topic is dropping.

Remote Learning

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

For most colleges, universities and K-12 institutions, remote learning is more or less a synonym for distance learning. That’s why the trends for this subject mirror the other fairly closely, albeit at slightly different volumes. Depending on the wider landscape when schools resume in 2021 after the usual winter break, you could very well see a fresh surge in distance & remote learning coverage and analysis.

Digital Workspace

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

This topic, digital workspace, is a bit of an outlier. It doesn’t see the same volume of coverage as some of the more mainstream subjects, but it has seen pretty steady interest over the past year (naturally, with the typical peak in March).

We suspect that this is because the concept of digital workspaces was already gaining ground before the pandemic hit. Digital workspaces aren’t tied to remote work exclusively. Rather, they account for mobile employees as well, and supporting mobility was—and still is—a top priority for many organizations.

Virtual Desktop

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

Speaking of digital workspaces, that segues quite nicely into the virtual desktop.

Virtual desktop infrastructure, or VDI, has been a conventional way for IT to provide remote, mobile and even static end users with a standardized computing environment. And it makes sense that virtual desktop would have been a go-to term back in March and April when organizations were making rapid transitions to offsite and WFH models. What’s more revealing is how it compares to our next and final term.

Virtual Apps

Bar graphic of Key Remote Work Trends

If you were to overlay the virtual desktop graph atop this one for virtual apps, you might not see a huge discrepancy after March and April. The bars charting levels of interest are roughly the same height. The real difference is in volume. Since the pandemic hit, the topic of virtual apps has consistently been logging about 40% more coverage from new authors. In May, for example, when some 6,000 authors were discussing virtual desktops, more than 10,000 were talking about virtual apps. Prior to the pandemic, those levels are even more pronounced.

What explains that? Virtual application delivery has been increasingly recognized as a more efficient way to provide end users with flexible digital workspaces. It’s why Computerworld dubbed Cameyo “the new alternative to Citrix” back in July. Granted – virtual application delivery doesn’t need to replace virtual desktops. In many organizations, some people (a smaller group of power users) may truly need a full virtual desktop environment. But the majority of people simply need secure access to all of their business-critical applications on any device, which is where virtual app delivery comes in. So virtual app delivery is more about enabling organizations to right-size their approach to desktop & application virtualization.

These days, the situation on the ground is changing so fast that it can be hard to keep up. Nowhere is that state of flux more apparent than in the workplace, which continues to see a shift to remote and work-from-home models. Image for Cameyo Remote Work Stats Blog

To help keep things in perspective, let’s take a look at some of more surprising and exciting stats on remote work from recent months. The trends that they highlight could help you optimize your own organization’s IT environment and prepare for a very different future.

Remote work boosts employee productivity & satisfaction

According to TechRepublic, a Flexjobs survey found that 95% of workers who’ve been working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic say their productivity is equal to or higher than it was at the traditional office. The reasons? Fewer distractions and more individual control over their workspace.

Not surprisingly, the same survey noted that a solid majority (65%) of remote workers also want to continue doing so full-time after the crisis is over.

Employers who can support those remote workers are therefore likely to see the dual benefit of employees who are both happier and more productive. No wonder, then, that Flexjobs saw a continued 12% increase in remote job listings between July and August 2020. Furthermore, between Q2 and Q3 2020, there was a 53% increase in the number of new companies recruiting remote workers.

The move to remote work is real—and here to stay

As we’ve noted before, the Flexjobs report isn’t the only indicator of a growing—and permanent—shift to remote work. Charity-minded shopping site DealAid.org conducted a survey of 1,000+ US employees and found that 79% of full-timers are now working remotely. Nearly all of them (92%) are happy doing so, and 57% of them said they’re more productive.

Mark McKee, the president and COO of payroll software company OnPay, echoed some of those findings in a recent article for Forbes. His company’s State of Small Business in 2020 survey found that 70% of employees said working from home was either easier or no more difficult than their pre-pandemic work environment. Nearly one-quarter said it was much easier.

Their employers have adapted in kind. Whereas 44% of the small businesses had a formal work-from-home policy before the pandemic, close to three-quarters adopted one in response to statewide shelter-in-place orders. An additional 50% of those employers are now planning on having some form of remote workforce post-COVID-19.

Number of mobile workers predicted to grow to 93.5 million

Leading market intelligence provider IDC puts some of those trends in context with its forecast that the number of mobile workers will expand to 93.5 million in the United States in 2024. That, as ZDNet reports, is up from 78.5 million in 2020. It means that mobile workers will represent almost 60% of the US workforce—a growth largely driven by the current shift to remote work.

For reference, the current population of the United States is 330 million. So, to put it another way, at least one in every four Americans will be engaged in mobile and/or remote work in the near future.

Remote work raises security concerns among IT pros

Change inevitably comes with some uncertainty. Which is why IT leaders are uneasy about the security implications of remote work, according to a new global report from Tessian. A story from Australia’s IT Brief notes that over 80% of those IT experts worry that work-from-home staff put their company at greater risk to cyberattacks.

Those concerns are validated by recent experience. Between March and July, half of the organizations surveyed were faced with a security incident of some kind. Half of them were phishing attacks. And that doesn’t represent the total number of phishing attempts. Over three-quarters (78%) of remote workers received phishing e-mails on their personal devices during that five-month period. Even more concerning is that 68% said they clicked on the malicious links or downloaded the attachments.

At the same time, the IT leaders in Tessian’s report reported an increase in ransomware attacks using phishing as a vector. A separate article from ITWeb corroborates that. Compared to the same period in 2019, Kaspersky research has shown that ransomware attacks increased more than tenfold in the first two quarters of 2020.

With the majority of the world’s workforce shifting to remote work over the past 7 months, organizations are finding that their attack surface has grown significantly. Recently a spate of reports have come out identifying a massive spike in attacks targeted at remote workers, including:

  • Kaspersky revealed that the increase in remote work has driven a 10X increase in ransomware and brute force attacks in the first two quarters of 2020
  • The FBI reports that the number of cyberattack complaints received by its cyber division each day grew by 400%, to nearly 4,000 a day, when compared to before the COVID outbreak
  • Barracuda reports seeing a 667% spike in phishing attacks since February
  • ZDnet reports that while some ransomware groups have heavily targeted VPNs to breach corporate networks in H1 2020, compromised RDP endpoints are still the number one attack target

“As organizations shift to a model where they must enable remote work on a permanent or hybrid basis for much of their workforce, their attack surface can grow significantly due to RDP and HTTP vulnerabilities,” said Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). Port Shield Blog Post

The need for remote productivity must never come at the expense of security. Which is why today we announced that we’ve expanded our Cameyo Port Shield technology to increase protection against the rise in exploit, brute force, and ransomware attacks aimed at remote workers. In addition to protecting against RDP vulnerabilities, Port Shield now extends to HTTP/S ports as well – reducing the attack surface for remote workers by automatically keeping all RDP and HTTP/S ports closed, except when needed.

“Some technologies currently being used to enable remote work were developed decades ago, and were designed for a world where remote work was the exception, not the widespread norm,” said Eyal Dotan, Founder and CTO of Cameyo. “Cameyo is a cloud-native Digital Workspace platform that was designed from the ground up with security at the foundation. The extension of our Port Shield technology to HTTP ports is the latest evolution of our core security functionality, designed to reduce your attack surface while still making it incredibly simple to securely deliver all of the applications your people need to be productive on any device.”

Extending Cameyo Port Shield’s capabilities to HTTP ports provides yet another layer of security for organizations that need to ensure their people have access to all of the business-critical apps they need to be productive while securing both the remote workers and the corporate network at the same time. Port Shield works by managing the Windows Firewall and keeping a server’s RDP and HTTP/S ports closed at all times, then dynamically opening them only for certain authenticated users, only as needed.

Security is foundational to Cameyo’s approach to Digital Workspaces. Our founder here at Cameyo is Eyal Dotan, who has spent his entire career in security, and holds 12 patents in the space. He was previously CTO at BufferZone, where he helped build its patented endpoint security technology. Prior to that he was the creator of Ivanti Endpoint Security (formerly the award-winning ViGUARD, which was acquired by Ivanti), one of the first Host Intrusion Prevention (HIPS) software solutions of its kind. Eyal was the Founder & CTO at ViGUARD, which was the first protection technology to have blocked malware such as ILoveYou, Melissa, Klez, Blaster, and Sasser viruses without using black-list signatures.

As a result, Eyal’s approach to building Cameyo has always been with security developed at the core, as the foundation of the platform – never as an add-on. Thus, the expanded functionality of Port Shield has been rolled out to all users of the Cameyo platform as of today, and is included at no additional cost.
