A few days ago, Computerworld ran a feature article with the headline “Cameyo – the new alternative to Citrix.” Obviously, with a bold claim like that, the article has received a lot of attention. And as you’d expect when a large legacy vendor like Citrix is attacked, the article has been met with some skepticism as well.
So let me be the first to say – we get it.
We understand that as the Digital Workspace startup disrupting the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) markets, we have to prove ourselves. And that is why this Computerworld article is so interesting.
Here at Cameyo, our culture is centered around delivering innovative technology that makes our customers’ lives easier, ensuring that our customers are ecstatic, and then letting our customers do the talking. And that’s exactly how this article came about.
You’ll notice that there isn’t a single quote from Cameyo in that article. The entire article is based on what the columnist (independent analyst Rob Enderle) heard from our customers about their experience with Cameyo’s platform.
For example, one of our customers – Ur&Penn – pulls no punches when it comes to talking about why they replaced Nutanix Xi Frame and Citrix with Cameyo when they spoke with us for a case study. Emir Saffar, CIO at Ur&Penn, starts out by saying:
“First, we realized quickly that Xi Frame’s architecture requires one server for each and every user. So right away, this became an incredibly costly solution. But more importantly, the Xi Frame product for on-premise simply didn’t work as advertised. I told them – ‘How dare you charge money for such a solution? Nothing is working as expected. You should be ashamed, it still feels like a beta version’.”
Saffar goes on to discuss his experience with Citrix:
“Citrix was even more complex to set up than Xi Frame, so we had to hire an outside engineer to come set everything up, which just added more expense.”
Then, to sum up why he ultimately replaced both Nutanix and Citrix with Cameyo, Saffar says:
“Unlike Nutanix Xi Frame and Citrix XenApp, there is no complicated infrastructure to deploy and manage. Not only were we up and running with Cameyo in less than three hours, but we can also deploy new apps almost instantly. We never have to re-image or deal with a Golden Image. Cameyo could not be easier.”
“Unlike Nutanix Xi Frame and Citrix XenApp where our employees either couldn’t access their applications at all or were frequently experiencing performance issues and being logged out, Cameyo provides a native application experience with no performance lags, through the browser. From a user experience perspective, they use the same desktop version of the applications they’re used to – but those applications simply run in a browser tab instead of needing to be deployed and managed locally. There’s nothing new to learn on the user’s side.”
“Right off the bat, Cameyo doesn’t require any complex infrastructure and you don’t need to hire a third-party engineer to set it up – so that’s a huge cost savings rights there. Also, since Cameyo is able to support dozens of users per instance instead of an architecture that requires one server for every user, that provides dramatic savings as well.”
When Computerworld asked Ur&Penn to provide solid numbers/data about the cost savings they’ve seen with Cameyo thus far, here’s what Saffar provided to the writer:
- We went from having 4 Citrix VM’s to 1 Cameyo VM.
- We have saved over 33% in licensing costs by replacing Citrix with Cameyo.
- We now have 28% lower support and maintenance costs than we did with Citrix.
You can read the full Ur&Penn case study here to get the whole story of why Cameyo was able to displace an incumbent like Citrix. But that’s just one example. Another customer – a school district, CSD99 in Illinois – has this to say about why they selected Cameyo over legacy providers like Citrix and VMware:
“When it comes to Citrix and VMware, there is just so much complexity – not just in the deployment phase, but from an ongoing management perspective as well. With Cameyo’s Digital Workspace solution, all of the complexity that exists on the backend just melts away from the user’s perspective. The hurdles you normally hit during deployment and the ongoing issues of managing VDI and DaaS – all of that is eliminated with Cameyo.”
“After our first phone call with Cameyo, we had the solution up and running within a few hours. Cameyo has simplified everything that typically causes people pain in VDI and DaaS, so you get all of the powerful functionality of enabling access to critical applications from anywhere – but without the upfront issues and ongoing management headache.”

As you can see, this has nothing to do with what we, Cameyo, believe about our ability to beat Citrix. We understand that we can’t just say we’re better and expect the industry to take note.
So we will remain unflinchingly focused on delivering a Digital Workspace solution that simply works – cost-effectively and securely. We’ll ensure that our customers have an incredible experience – both when it comes to deploying the platform and their people’s daily use. And then we’ll stand back and continue to let our customers do the talking so that the industry – just like Computerworld – continues to see, time and again, the proof of what we deliver.
